Bay Area Rallies to Stand With Marawi,
Demand an End To Martial Law in the Philippines!
Bay Area leaders will rally in front of the Philippine Consulatein San
Franciscoto call attention to the need for genuine peace in the
Philippines instead of increased militarization. Mindanao remains the
region in the Philippines with the largest deployment of Philippine
military and the largest concentration of US military personnel. On May
23, 2017, a firefight ensued between the Armed Forces of the Philippines
(AFP) and the Maute group allegedly affiliated with Islamic State (ISIS)
militants in Marawi City, Mindanao. Following the
clash,PhilippinePresident Duterte declared martial law for 60 days on
the entire island of Mindanao on May 23, 2017 at 10:00pm. The
declaration of martial law raises concerns amongst many community
members about Martial Law and the suspension of the writ of habeus
corpus, which may lead to unwarranted arrests, detention, and other
human rights violations.
WHAT:
The rally will bring together Filipino organizations, church leaders,
students, and social justice activists to condemn the recent declaration
of martial law in Mindanao by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The
group will be calling on President Duterte to revoke the martial law
declaration to ensure the protection of civilian communities from
greater violence and militarization.
