Spring 2014

Dear Friends of the Freedom Archives,

We are deeply saddened by a number of recent losses to our Freedom 
Archives family. In addition to Amiri Baraka and Chokwe Lumumba, we lost 
both Mabel Williams and Fred Ho in April.  All of them participated in 
and contributed to our work over the
last 15 years.

       The legendary Mabel Williams, along with her husband Robert F.
    Williams, fought for and carried out the right of armed self-defense
    against the vicious attacks of the Ku Klux Klan and white
    supremacists throughout the South. She militantly represented the
    liberation struggle of her people during exile in Cuba, China, and
    Africa, and upon their return to the US, continued an active
    lifelong engagement in social justice struggles. Although often
    overshadowed by her husband's fame, Mabel Williams made
    revolutionary contributions in her own right that deserve to be
    recognized and celebrated.


We had the good fortune of working closely with Mabel Williams on 
several documentaries and events, and we are honored to present audio 
and video clips in special tribute to her on our website.

with the Williams family.

Inspired by the Black Power movement and other liberation struggles, 
Fred Ho played a powerful baritone sax and combined Indigenous, 
traditional Asian, and African melodies in big band compositions. Fred 
Ho was not only a personal friend, but shared his music in our 
productions, most notably the Robert F. Williams - Self Respect, Self 
Defense & Self Determination as told by Mabel Williams Audio 
Documentary.  He also generously contributed his music to our video on 
the San Francisco 8 -- Legacy of Torture.

We were honored to participate in a community event paying tribute to 
Chokwe Lumumba on March 16th of this year. Organized by the Malcolm X 
Grassroots Movement at Eastside Arts and Cultural Center in Oakland, the 
event brought together a large and diverse group of friends and 
supporters of Chokwe's, and was truly a testament to his dynamic life's 
work. In addition to his amazing work and lifelong dedication to Black 
liberation and human rights, Chokwe was a supporter of the Freedom Archives.

Your ongoing support of the Freedom Archives makes possible our ability 
to honor the legacies of Robert and Mabel Williams, as well as the work 
of Fred Ho, Amiri Baraka, and Chokwe Lumumba. More importantly, your 
help makes possible the preservation of these important contributions 
and those of many others within a rich history of radical politics and 
culture---and, as generations pass, your help ensures that this resource 
will serve many generations to come.

On May 31st 2014, we will travel to Denver to document the Chican@ 
Movement's Symbols of Resistance gathering to honor Ricardo Falcón, Luis 
'Junior' Martínez, Los Seis de Boulder, and Carlos Zapata. We will 
conduct extensive interviews with both movement veterans and today's 
activists, to delve more deeply into and build upon our segment on the 
Chican@ movement in Cointelpro 101. We hope to develop a documentary 
that more fully and critically explores our understanding of the Chican@ 
movement's resistance and government repression against it.

Our internship program continues to attract talented young folks from 
around the Bay Area. Our current interns include students from MetWest 
High School in Oakland who not only contribute to the Archives, but also 
publish on our blogsite and have started an online newspaper, entirely 
staffed by high school students and focusing on news relevant to youth 
in Oakland.

Our online search engine continues to grow and expand. Among recent 
additions is our collection on African Liberation Movements, featuring 
materials from Eritrea, the Congo, South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, 
Namibia, and Guinea-Bissau. Check out the site at 
search.freedomarchives.org to get an idea of the depth and breadth of 
this growing collection.
