Summit Dresses Up, Goes Nowhere
Some 50,000 people have been on the streets of Mar del Plata since dawn to
say no to the US president and condemn the failed Free Trade Area of the
Americas (FTAA), which has been rejected by several countries in the region.
More than 5,000 delegates who attended the Peoples Summit, which was held
until Thursday under the motto "Another America Is Possible", will join
former soccer star Diego Maradona and 160 Argentine and foreign
personalities in the march.
Travelling in the so-called Alba Express, which left from Buenos Aires on
Thursday, are Maradona, Bolivian indigenous leader and presidential
candidate Evo Morales, moviemaker Emir Kusturica and Argentine author and
Deputy Miguel Bonasso.
The march will conclude with a mass rally at a stadium, where Venezuela
President Hugo Chávez will address the crowd, and Cuban singer songwriter
Silvio Rodríguez and Argentine singer Victor Heredia will perform.
The Argentine Workers Confederation ratified a nationwide strike to condemn
Washington´s intention to impose free trade in the region.
