True colors One of the most beautiful sights in the Mission District is the
MaestraPeace Mural, which adorns the Women's Building and is marking a
triumphant 10-year anniversary this week. Seven female artists painted the
colorful, multistory mural back in 1994, highlighting revolutionary,
courageous women from different cultures. Over the years, MaestraPeace's
powerful imagery has inspired those who attend events at the Women's
Building (proving that once in a while you can judge a book by its cover);
it's also an eye-catching landmark that's weathered numerous acts of
hateful vandalism. Head down to the Women's Building which also happens
to be celebrating a monumental year, with 25 candles on the cake for a
street fair honoring the mural, the women who created it, and the community
that holds it in appropriately high esteem. The festivities include
performances by drum-and-dance troupe Loco Bloco, belly dancers Mirage,
Barauna Capoeira, and others as well as live music, booths featuring
grassroots women artists, kids' activities, and much more. Noon-5 p.m.,
Women's Building, 3543 18th St., S.F. Free. (415) 431-1180,
