Movement for a Democratic Society (mds)
The Movement for a Democratic Society (mds) is a multi-issue activist
organization affiliated with the Students for a Democratic Society
(SDS). Many of its members are veterans of the New Left in the 60's
and 70's, of the Civil Rights Movement or of other community
organizing efforts. The goal of MDS is the creation of a more
egalitarian society in both the political and economic spheres. MDS
believes in participatory democracy, the expansion of human rights,
universal healthcare, the rejection of all forms of discrimination,
the preservation of the earth's environment, the expansion of
workers' rights, a more equitable distribution of wealth, and the
rejection of militarism and war as a way of resolving differences
among peoples and nations.
In Austin, many of us are former members of SDS and former staff of
The Rag, an alternative newspaper (1966-1977). We are in favor of
people determinng their own lives, free of domination by big
government and big corporations. We support gender equality, racial
equality and economic equity. We embrace a radical vision of a
democratic society where at all levels people have control of the
decisions whcih affect them and the resources on which they are
dependent. We want an immediate end to the war in Iraq. We believe
our common resources should be invested in the common good -
education and universal health care, solutions to global warming,
renewable energy sources, jobs with dignity, and an end to poverty.
